Understanding your result

Use scores as a discussion aid alongside dependencies, strategy and evidence. A numerical ranking cannot determine the right roadmap by itself.

Common mistakes

  • Treating 80% confidence as 80 instead of 0.8 multiplies the score by 100.
  • Changing reach periods between ideas makes comparisons misleading.

Check your calculation

  • Use the worked example as a known reference case, then change one input at a time and check the direction and units of the response.

Choose a consistent measurement basis

Choose one reach period and consistent impact scale across ideas. Include effort from all contributors in the same person-month unit; confidence 80 means 80%.

A second independently worked case

Zero assigned confidence gives score zero regardless of reach and impact. Inputs: Reach in chosen period: 1000 people/period; Impact score: 2 score; Confidence: 0 %; Total effort: 4 person-months. Results: RICE score: 0 score.

Precision and output units

Displayed results: RICE score in score, rounded to 3 decimal places. Display rounding does not establish the precision of the original measurements or estimates.

Common uses

  • What RICE score follows from my reach, impact, confidence and effort estimates
  • Compare RICE Prioritization across scenarios under matching definitions.

How it works

Multiply reach, impact and confidence as a fraction, then divide by positive total effort. The arithmetic follows RICE; estimating its inputs remains a team judgment.

Worked example

1,000 × 2 × 0.80 ÷ 4 = 400. Enter reach in chosen period 1000 people/period, impact score 2 score, confidence 80 %, total effort 4 person-months. The independently worked result is rice score 400 score. Compare this example with your reporting definitions before substituting your own figures.

FAQ

Is confidence a statistical probability?

Here it is a prioritization weight assigned using the team’s evidence convention. It is not a calibrated probability of success or a statistical confidence interval.

Are person-months the same as calendar months?

No. Two people each working one month contribute approximately two person-months of effort, even when the calendar duration is one month. Include effort from all relevant contributors.
