Paper size, area and sheet mass calculator
Choose a nominal paper size, enter its grammage and sheet count, and calculate dimensions, area and estimated paper mass.
Reference calculation or estimate for example inputs; assumptions and limitations apply.
Calculations run in your browser.
What to enter
| Input | Meaning and units |
|---|---|
| Nominal paper size | Choose the option that matches your measurement or scenario. |
| Paper grammage (g/m²) | Use supplier or measured GSM; this does not determine paper thickness. |
| Number of sheets | Whole sheet count; packaging and finishing materials are excluded. |
Understanding your result
Dimensions and area describe the selected nominal reference sheet. The mass is an estimate using your grammage and sheet count; it excludes packaging, ink, coatings and finishing materials.
Common mistakes
- Treating A4 and Letter as the same size.
- Confusing page size with printable area or GSM with thickness.
- Copying rounded converted columns instead of converting the source nominal units consistently.
Check your calculation
- Use the worked example as a known reference case, then change one input at a time and check the direction and units of the response.
Calculation checks, sources and review limits
What are this paper size’s dimensions and estimated mass at a given GSM?
Select the nominal size and enter grammage and count. The tool calculates reference dimensions and area, then estimates mass from your GSM.
Common uses
- Compare A4 with US Letter dimensions.
- Estimate paper mass for a stated sheet count and grammage.
How it works
Nominal dimensions come from the manufacturer/publisher sources below. Inch dimensions convert using 25.4 mm per inch. Sheet area in m² equals width in mm × height in mm ÷ 1,000,000. Estimated total mass in grams equals sheet area × GSM × sheet count. GSM means grams per square metre, not paper thickness. Portrait and landscape swap width/height but preserve area. Nominal page size is different from printable area; bleed and margins are not added automatically.
Worked example
A4 nominal dimensions are 210 × 297 mm, giving 0.06237 m². At 80 GSM, one sheet estimates 4.9896 g; 500 sheets estimate 2,494.8 g.
