What to enter
| Input | Meaning and units |
|---|---|
| Distance (m) | Enter distance in m; use the same basis as the other measurements. |
| Time (s) | Enter time in s; use the same basis as the other measurements. |
Understanding your result
Read Speed (m/s) in the units and model stated on this page. The formula speed = distance ÷ time defines the relationship; measurement accuracy and model applicability are separate from numerical precision.
Common mistakes
- Mixing input units or changing the physical meaning of a variable without changing the model.
Check your calculation
- Use the worked example as a known reference case, then change one input at a time and check the direction and units of the response.

What is the speed given the distance and time?
Calculate speed from distance and time. Enter the two known values in the stated SI units and see the formula and result.
Common uses
- Find the unknown speed from two known measurements.
- Check unit consistency before using distance, speed & time.
How it works
Start with distance = speed × time. Rearrange the relationship to speed = distance ÷ time. Enter distance in m and time in s; the result is speed in m/s. Values must be nonnegative and any denominator must be positive. The model assumes consistent quantities and units. Use a constant speed or an appropriate mean speed over the stated duration. This scalar model calculates distance travelled, not a route or displacement vector.
Worked example
Distance: 10 m; Time: 2 s gives speed: 5 m/s.
