Understanding your result

Read Arithmetic mean, Median, Minimum, Maximum, Number of values in the units and model stated on this page. The formula mean = Σx ÷ n defines the relationship; measurement accuracy and model applicability are separate from numerical precision.

Common mistakes

  • Using a different mathematical definition or operation than the one stated by this tool.

Check your calculation

  • Use the worked example as a known reference case, then change one input at a time and check the direction and units of the response.

What are the average and middle value of these numbers?

Enter your list to calculate its arithmetic mean and median, along with the smallest value, largest value and count. Every listed value contributes equally.

Common uses

  • Average a set of measurements or scores.
  • Compare the mean and median when a list has extreme values.

How it works

The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle of the sorted values; for an even count, average the two middle values. The median is less sensitive to extreme values. Each listed value counts once, including repeated values. Use dots for decimals and commas, semicolons or line breaks between values.

Worked example

For 2, 4, 6, 8: mean = 20 ÷ 4 = 5; median = (4 + 6) ÷ 2 = 5. Minimum is 2 and maximum is 8.
