What to enter
| Input | Meaning and units |
|---|---|
| Value | Enter value using the definition in the method and example. |
| From | Select the unit or currency in which the entered number is currently expressed. |
| To | Select the unit or currency you need for the answer. |
Understanding your result
The converted value describes the same data quantity in the selected target unit. Display rounding does not add precision to the original measurement.
Common mistakes
- Confusing the source and target units, or overlooking a prefix or case-sensitive symbol.
- Mixing bits and bytes, or decimal kB/MB with binary KiB/MiB.
Check your calculation
- Convert to the target unit and then reverse the direction. Within display rounding, you should recover the original value.

How do I express this data size in another unit?
Enter the known data size value and choose its source and target units. The converter expresses the same quantity in the selected target unit.
Common uses
- Compare storage capacities using decimal or binary prefixes.
- Translate between bits and bytes.
How it works
Decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000; binary prefixes use powers of 1,024. Convert through bytes. A lowercase b usually means bits, while an uppercase B means bytes.
Worked example
1 mebibyte = 1,048,576 bytes; 1 megabyte = 1,000,000 bytes.
