What to enter
| Input | Meaning and units |
|---|---|
| Total investment cost | Enter total investment cost using the definition in the method and example. |
| Total proceeds | Enter total proceeds using the definition in the method and example. |
Understanding your result
The outputs describe the mathematical scenario you entered. Assumed rates, timing and included costs determine the result; an estimate is not an offer or eligibility decision.
Common mistakes
- Mixing annual and monthly periods, or leaving out a cost that the model does not include.
Check your calculation
- Compare a simple one-period or zero-change case with hand arithmetic before applying a longer scenario.

What percentage return did I make on the money invested?
Enter total investment cost and total proceeds to find the simple gain or loss percentage. This return is not annualized and does not model the timing of cash flows.
Common uses
- Compare simple returns using consistent cost definitions.
- Express a gain or loss as a percentage of the money invested.
How it works
Subtract the initial cost from the proceeds to find net gain, then divide by the cost. Proceeds should include the ending value plus distributions, less costs you want included. This simple percentage is not annualized and does not account for cash-flow timing.
Worked example
An investment costing 1,000 with total proceeds of 1,200 has a gain of 200 and a simple ROI of 20%.
